There’s been a lot of debating around the whole locked in/open mobile phone experience in recent years; especially with the addition of the iPhone to the market, so I thought I’d wade in with my own opinion. As we all know; every opinion on the Internet is worth reading and full of merit.
In case your reading this and don’t what I mean by locked in or open, the difference is fairly simple. A locked in system (like the iPhone) prevents unauthorised use of the phone in question. What is unauthorised? Well unauthorised is basically whatever the manufacturer deems unauthorised. Sometimes this can be useful restrictions that prevent oblivious users putting malicious code on their phone that could render it unusable, or worse, infect other phones. The downside however, is that manufacturers invariably don’t stop with the useful restrictions, and soon move on to abritrary useless restrictions that do nothing but make the manufacturer more money while hampering the user experience.

Thankfully this is not something I have run afoul of just yet, but just hearing about it makes me angry, and I can’t help feeling this will begin to affect me shortly. There are two parts to this brief rant to wireless providers in general.

Recently I saw the new Harry Potter film… twice. This was a film I was looking forward to and, along with Terminator Salvation and Star Trek, one of only three films I was truly excited about at the start of 2009. Having read(listened to) the book a few times I was especially looking forward to seeing how some of my favourite bits from the book had been translated to the big screen. Having now seen the film twice and given my first impressions time to settle and become somewhat more thoughtful opinions, I thought I’d talk about the film; both as a sequel to the Order of the Phoenix film, and as an adaption of the Half-Blood Prince book. I won’t be looking at it from the point of view as a film in its own right; as the sixth film in a series of eight, based on the sixth book in a series of seven which the films have been differing more and more from with every release, the film was never going to be a great film by itself. There will be spoilers from both the book and the film, but at the end and I will warn you before giving anything away… though I imagine anyone with the slightest interest in this will have seen the film by now.

I finally plumped up the cash and bought a 16gb iPhone a few weeks ago. PayG of course, one of the reasons I waited was because I refused to be stuck with one service provider, especially o2! So I’m running it on T-Mobile with a Turbo Sim unlocking thingamajig. It’s not working perfect yet as I can’t get the internet through the cell network, but I haven’t really played with it.

Weeks have passed since I excitedly clicked the order button for a shiny new microphone that would become my ticket to an audio presence. I now find myself in a very similar situation to a few months ago when I last tried to use eBay. So now having attempted without success to contact the third party seller I await Amazon’s reply to my claim. How annoying.

Dear readers,
Though very few, if any, of you will be aware of Drivebychicken’s previous incarnations, (it wasn’t exactly rife with regular readers) I am very pleased to write this first blog entry on the new and hopefully final purpose of this website. But before I go into what that is, I will briefly explain the history.
