A brief message to wireless providers

August 6th, 2009

Thankfully this is not something I have run afoul of just yet, but just hearing about it makes me angry, and I can’t help feeling this will begin to affect me shortly. There are two parts to this brief rant to wireless providers in general.

Part 1

If you provide me with a way of connecting to Internet that has a bandwidth cap, meaning that a fixed amount that my bill covers and that going over said amount will result in increased charges or ceasing of service, you DO NOT have the right to then disable the means to use another device with that connection!!! You are providing a connection, NOTHING ELSE! If you cap my bandwidth at 5gb, then I am paying for 5gb of data. The way I receive that data is of no concern to you, as a service provider, and you should mind your own business and stick your tethering charges up your… you get the idea.

Part 2

In addition to the above, said providers of wireless service; specifically mobile phone service, should note that a text message is not some mythical thing that is of its own world and subject to its own pricing; it is 140 bytes of data! Data is covered in the previous part, if I am paying for 5gb of data through my phone, you do not need to charge me 10p per text message, it’s still just data and it goes through the same network.

Thank you for your time.
